Martin, Sydney Percival

Private Sydney Martin was born in the Sydney suburb or Gladesville on 11 Jan 1914. In 1937 he was a labourer working in the orchards near Griffith, NSW.

Syd enlisted on 29 Oct 1939 in Paddington, NSW and joined the Australian Army Service Corps, Service No. NX3077. He was among the first to volunteer for the 2nd AIF.

He served with the 6th Division and was captured in Kalamata Greece. His POW No. was 3650.

Syd was killed in an industrial accident in Klagenfurt on 18 Dec 1944 along with a British soldier Corporal Fred Lee. He was aged 30.

Private Martin was buried in the Klagenfurt War Cemetery.

  1. My name is Julie Fielke and Sydney Percival Martin is my Great Uncle. My Grandfather James Royal Martin was his brother.
    I was close with my grandfather and he shared memories of his brother with me. I would be grateful for any further information or photographs of my uncle. Kind Regards Julie Fielke.
