Winter, Donald Thomas Henry

Lance Corporal Don Winter was a signalman with 1 Corps Sigs in the Australian Corps of Signals and was captured in Kalamata, Greece on 29 Apr 1941. He was transported by train to Wolfsberg (Stalag 18A) with time spent in Corinth and Salonika. Don arrived in Wolfsberg in July 1941. His service number was QX308 and his POW Number was 3853. By war's end Don was interned for 1,468 days.

Don was born in Sydney, NSW on 24 Feb 1920. He was the third youngest soldier in the camp. He enlisted in the 2nd AIF in Albion, Queensland when he was 19. Post-war, Don married and was employed as a linesman. He lived in the Brisbane suburb of Chelmer. He died 17 Aug 1962 in Brisbane. He was 42.
